Profonanpe and the Green Climate Fund
We congratulate our member Profonanpe for receiving the approval of the first project in Latin America financed with resources from the Green Climate Fund (FVC). A few days ago Peru became the first country in Latin America to be designated to receive resources from the Green Climate Fund (FVC), thanks to the approval of a Profonanpe project aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. The decision was made by the Board of Directors of the Green Climate Fund (GCCF) in early November in the city of Livingstone, Zambia (Africa).
The project presented by Profonanpe aims to provide electricity to fruit processing plants in the northwestern region of the Amazon basin, near the Marañon and Pastaza rivers in Peru. The most important aspect of the project is the generation of solar energy to illuminate these plants, avoiding the devastation of the region's forests, the use of fossil fuels and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; thus mitigating the effects of climate change.
Out of 37 proposals submitted for VCF funding, only 8 were selected, and the only Latin American initiative among those chosen was the project entitled "Building Resilience in the Wetlands of Datem del Marañon Province in Peru", formulated by Profonanpe. More than USD 9 million has been earmarked for this project, which will begin implementation in March 2016, with money from FVC (USD $6.24 million), the South Korean Cooperation Agency (USD $1.8 million) and Profonanpe's counterpart (USD $1.07 million).
