RedLAC at the CAFÉ 2015 Assembly
A RedLAC delegation participated in the CAFÉ Assembly (our peer network in Africa) that took place on September 21 and 22 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. After the Assembly, between 23 and 25 September, the first workshop of Project K - Knowledge for Action - our new joint initiative CAFÉ-RedLAC, was launched. The participants of the workshop and the Assembly in Ivory Coast by RedLAC were Laura Nägele (RedLAC Executive Secretariat, Action Fund), Alberto Paniagua (PROFONANPE), Yabanex Batista (Caribbean Biodiversity Fund), Fabio Leite (FUNBIO) and Suelen Marostica (FUNBIO). Some of them presented case studies based on experiences from their funds that were related to issues of interest expressed by CAFÉ members.
All funding for participants from the LAC region was covered by donations from Project K. In addition, five CAFÉ members will also receive funding to participate in RedLAC's Assembly, during October 2015. The main theme of CAFÉ's Assembly was "Innovative Financial Mechanisms". Guests from both networks, and even external guests, presented their experiences. On the other hand, for the first Project K workshop the theme chosen was "Cultivating successful cooperation between Environmental Funds, donors and investors", whose facilitator was Tom Stephens, Executive Director of the Conservation Philanthropy Facility.
This enriching meeting was full of exchange of experiences and update on trends in conservation finance, ending with a field trip to a protected area in Ivory Coast, which receives strong support from the host fund, Foundation for Parks, due to its unique biodiversity. RedLAC thanks the host Fund of the Assembly V of CAFÉ, also the Executive Secretary of CAFÉ and all members of the network in Africa, who contributed to the success of this meeting.
We also thank the sponsors of Project K (FFEM, GEF and MAVA Foundation) for funding this and future delegations that participate in both the CAFÉ and RedLAC Assemblies, as it is a way to strengthen collaboration and exchange of experiences among networks and strengthen their members.
