FUNBIO celebrates its 25th anniversary and participates in two innovative initiatives
In June, the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (FUNBIO) celebrated 25 years of working for nature conservation. In addition, it supported the launch of the "Guide to sustainable consumption of marine fish" carried out by the Fishery Resources project. This visual guide supported by the fund is part of the Support to Marine and Fisheries Research in Rio de Janeiro project, as a compensation measure established under a consent decree agreed between the PetroRio company and the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Rio de Janeiro. It analyses the risks of fish consumption due to contamination, pointing to species at the top of the food chain as the most prone to sources of contamination. It also compiles information on endangered species that should not be consumed by humans and those that, on the contrary, are suitable for consumption.

In addition, he supported the Franciscan Conservation Project, which seeks to protect Franciscan dolphins, famous for their long beaks and extreme shyness. Fewer than 20,000 are estimated to survive in Brazil, so few that for decades researchers had managed to take photographs of live specimens. That has changed thanks to the use of drones, and the discovery of a previously unknown population in the state of Rio de Janeiro. To celebrate this achievement, the Franciscana Virtual Mini-Museum will open to web visitors in December, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in 3D experiences. The exhibition rooms will display replicas of Brazil's most endangered dolphin, skeletons, sounds, images and information on the evolution and threats to the species. The museum will be hosted on the website of the Laboratory of Bioindicators and Aquatic Mammals of the UERJ (Maqua).
