RedLAC and GEF Highlighting the Vital Role of Conservation Funds in Global Biodiversity
Cali, Colombia, November 21, 2024 – As part of COP16, the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network (RedLAC) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) celebrated the launch of the publication “Recognizing the Vital Role of Conservation Funds in the Global Biodiversity Framework.” This document emphasizes the essential role of Conservation Trust Funds (CTFs), which include RedLAC, CAFÉ, and APNET, in implementing global biodiversity conservation strategies.
CTFs are legally independent institutions that provide sustainable funding for biodiversity by mobilizing resources from various sources, including international donors, national governments, and the private sector. These resources are primarily directed through grants to government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities, who are on the frontlines of the biodiversity crisis. Their ability to manage financial flows systematically ensures that the funds are used effectively to reduce threats, enhance conservation and restoration efforts, and accelerate the implementation of global biodiversity targets.
The launch event served as a key platform to recognize how CTFs from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia have effectively linked global and national financing with high-impact local investments. These institutions not only protect critical ecosystems but also engage local communities and promote sustainable solutions that address environmental, climate, and sustainable development challenges.
This publication reflects the commitment and capacity of CTFs to be agents of change in global conservation. Their work is crucial to achieving the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly the protection of 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.
RedLAC remains committed to continuing collaboration with governments, civil society, and strategic partners to maximize the impact of conservation actions in Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond.
