Molluscan shellfish farming for sustainable extraction and fishing.

Navigating through the channels of the Jaltepeque estuary offers a natural spectacle, typical of this estuarine system that houses important sources of ecosystem services in the central zone of El Salvador, with a high biodiversity.

Between the scenic beauty of the mangroves and the coast, the inhabitants of the estuary depend directly on the coastal-marine resources for food, transportation, family economy and recreation. FIAES has been working for three decades in the conservation of these ecosystems, maintaining a close relationship with local stakeholders and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to conserve these livelihoods.

This year, in the Jaltepeque estuary, we are working on the implementation of two restoration components that include the strengthening of two Social and Environmental Committees and the maintenance of 6 kilometers of estuarine canals in the municipalities of Zacatecoluca, San Luis La Herradura and Tecoluca. In addition, the maintenance and restoration of two Natural Protected Areas: Nahualapa and Tehuacán, for cleaning actions and increasing tree cover, this project is executed by the Association of Municipalities of Los Nonualcos with technical and financial support from FIAES.

CENDEPESCA donated 150,000 seeds of Anadara Tuberculosa, one of the mollusks that provide economic sustenance for the fishing communities in the area.

Having allies that give continuity to restoration actions is key for FIAES projects to be sustainable. " This action that brings us together now, represents the continuity of an important initiative that we call "Cash for Work", developed within the framework of the implementation of the Green Development Fund II," said Jorge Oviedo, executive director of FIAES, at the delivery to fishermen in the area for the distribution of seeds of Anadara Tuberculosa in three corrals located in the communities of La Colorada, San Rafael Tasajera and San José de La Montañas, which were rehabilitated with the Cash for Work initiative, San Rafael Tasajera and San José de La Montañas, which were rehabilitated with the Cash for Work initiative, developed through a multilateral participation mechanism with strategic partners such as the Ministry of Environment and the cooperation of GIZ, in the year 2022.

FIAES remains committed to working for the conservation of the Jaltepeque Ramsar Site, as the second largest expanse of salt forest in El Salvador and with a variety of marine and coastal ecosystems, strategic to continue strengthening sustainable fisheries, environmental sanitation and contribute to increasing the resilience of communities against the effects of climate change.
