Workers for the Planet: The Importance of Work in Building a Sustainable and Just Future

On this May 1st, Workers' Day, RedLAC recognizes the importance of work in building a sustainable and just future. The work of workers is fundamental to the development of our societies and economies, and it is essential that this work be carried out in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

The transition to a sustainable and just future depends on the ability of workers and employers to adapt to new economic and environmental realities. At RedLAC, we believe that work must be a driver for building a better future and workers can be key actors in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation. Furthermore, the promotion of green and sustainable jobs can boost the economy and generate new employment opportunities.

The transition to a sustainable and just future is one of the greatest challenges of our time. According to the International Labour Organization's World Employment Report 2021, the transition to a sustainable economy could generate 24 million new jobs globally by 2030. However, to achieve this transition, workers and employers need to adapt to the new economic and environmental realities.

In her book "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History," American writer Elizabeth Kolbert argues that climate change is a global threat that forces us to rethink the relationship between humanity and the planet. At RedLAC, we believe that work must be an engine for building a better future for all. Workers can be key actors in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation, and the promotion of green and sustainable jobs can boost the economy and generate new employment opportunities.

This is one of the reasons why our members promote the education and training of workers in sustainability-related skills, enabling them to better adapt to new labor and environmental realities. Also to promote the creation of green and sustainable jobs, which can contribute to economic development and at the same time preserve the environment.

On this Workers' Day, we recall that decent work and environmental protection are two interconnected struggles. At RedLAC we pledge to continue working for a just and sustainable future for all.
