"Rossana Landa of Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza shared innovative strategies in forest fire protection at WILD FIRE 2023."

Rossana Landa, Coordinator of Projects and Strategic Alliances of Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (FMCN), participated in the 8th IWFC (International Wildland Fire Conference) - #WILDFIRE2023, sharing valuable experiences on the actions undertaken in Mexico in relation to fire protection and management.

The event brought together experts and leaders in forest fire management from around the world, and was held in the city of Porto, Portugal, from May 16 to 19. During his speech, Landa highlighted the fundamental role of local organizations in the protection and management of fire in Mexico and exchanged strategies and innovative approaches implemented by organizations that have demonstrated their ability to meet the challenges related to forest fires.

Forest fires represent a significant threat to the environment in Mexico, as in Latin America and the Caribbean, with serious environmental and economic consequences. According to data from international organizations, it is estimated that millions of hectares of forests and natural areas have been lost due to forest fires in the region in recent years.

Landa's participation in this prestigious conference not only highlights Mexico's efforts in forest fire management, but also fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing among different countries and regions. It also reaffirms FMCN's commitment to its mission to protect and preserve Mexico's natural resources and promote effective measures throughout the region.

In addition to sharing groundbreaking strategies in wildfire protection, Rossana also addressed the environmental and economic costs associated with these disasters in Latin America and the Caribbean. Forest fires not only represent an irreparable loss of biodiversity and vital ecosystems, but also have a significant impact on the region's economy. The destruction of valuable natural areas affects tourism, agricultural and forestry production, and jeopardizes the security and well-being of local communities.

In this context, the participation of experts in international conferences such as #WILDFIRE2023 becomes crucial. The exchange of knowledge and experiences in the city of Porto allowed the strengthening of strategies for prevention, response and recovery from forest fires, as well as the promotion and cooperation between countries to address this issue jointly. In doing so, FMCN reaffirmed its commitment to the protection and sustainable management of ecosystems, not only in Mexico, but throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The conservation of natural resources and the prevention of forest fires are key elements in ensuring a sustainable and resilient future.
