Amid an atmosphere steeped in purpose and dedication, the 13th Annual Assembly of the Consortium Africain des Fonds pour l’Environnement (CAFÉ) was inaugurated at the prestigious Gran Meliá Hotel in Arusha, Tanzania. This event, bringing together leaders and experts in environmental conservation, marks the initiation of crucial discussions concerning sustainable development and the safeguarding of natural resources in Africa.
The theme of this year, “Development of Fonds Fiduciaires for Conservation in Africa,” holds immense significance in the struggle to preserve the biodiversity and unique ecosystems of the region. Over the coming days, participants will collaborate to devise innovative strategies that drive investment in conservation and foster international cooperation.
The inaugural event was distinguished by the presence of esteemed personalities who have dedicated their energy and expertise to the environmental cause. Among them are:
• Her Excellency Mary Masanja, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism;
• Mr. Ramadhan Madeleka, Regional Administrative Secretary of the Arusha Region;
• Mr. Deusdidth K. Bwoyo, Director of Forest and Beekeeping, representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism;
• Mr. Abbas Juma Mzee, representing the Director of Forest from the Revolutionary Republic of Zanzibar;
• Prof. Shabani A. Chamshama, Chairman of the Board, Tanzania Forest Fund;
• Prof. John F. Kessy, Chairman of the Board, EAMCEF;
• Mr. Jorge Oviedo, Executive Director of FIAES (Environmental Investment Fund of El Salvador) and President of RedLAC (Network of Environmental Funds of Latin America and the Caribbean);
• Board Members of the Tanzania Forest Fund and EAMCEF;
• Directors and Heads of Sections of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
These individuals, convened at the head table, embody dedication and leadership in environmental preservation, addressing global challenges with a shared vision of a more sustainable future.
The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. Théophile Zognou, President of the Consortium Africain des Fonds pour l’Environnement (CAFÉ), as well as distinguished donors who have generously contributed to conservation initiatives. Among the donor institutions are the French Fund for Global Environment (FFEM) and other organizations whose financial support has been essential for the successful execution of conservation projects, with an emphasis on the BRIDGE Project, which shines as a beacon of hope for Latin America and the Caribbean.
One of the most significant moments occurred with the address delivered by Jorge Oviedo, Executive Director of FIAES (Environmental Investment Fund of El Salvador) and President of RedLAC (Network of Environmental Funds of Latin America and the Caribbean). In his capacity as the representative of the entire Network, Oviedo addressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges and highlighted the inspiring figure of Yacouba Sawadogo, a true African environmental hero who has shown how commitment and innovation can generate transformative impact in challenging contexts.
